Hardcore saved my life

National Geographic did an hour long documentary look at Straight Edge. It probably won't be news to anyone who's familiar with the movement going in ("straight edge kids don't drink--parents like that!" "some straight edge kids are violent--parents don't like that!")

Still, it was cool seeing footage of our homey Pat Flynn from Have Heart a few times. And one of the key scenes features a guy wearing a Shipwreck jacket.

The author of the sociological work Straight Edge: Clean-Living Youth, Hardcore Punk, And Social Change gets a lot of attention in the film/show (I assume he grew up in the SXE movement himself.) And if you haven't seen it already, the cover of that book is Pat Flynn. The guy is an icon. And a history major.
