I'm a huge proponent of the political rock song, but it's really hard to write one without coming off as preachy or screechy. (To be fair, I love the Arcade Fire, and I've never listened to Bright Eyes, so do what you will.)
I've always thought of John Samson as kind of a post-modern, Canadian Bob Dylan--highly literate, insanely clever, incredibly smart, vocally limited. He makes the personal political and the political personal better than any contemporary artist I'm aware of.
Anyway, Broseph has alerted to the fact his band the Weakerthans has posted a new song to their myspace. Come on, go listen. And, no, I don't think he's quite Dylan-level as a songwriter. But I'm not unwilling to mention them in the same blog post, and that's something.
